Electronics—Coatings for consumer electronics
Eastman cellulose esters have been used for many years in coatings for various plastic materials. Cellulose esters may be used in the barrier coat to protect the plastic from attack by strong solvents in subsequent coating layers. CABs are frequently used for aluminum flake orientation in CAB/acrylic metallic lacquers for both plastic and metal casings of consumer electronics. As many consumer electronics are constructed from a combination of metals and various plastics (ABS, acrylics, or cellulose plastics), a consistent appearance using butyrate/acrylic coating compositions can be achieved. The clear systems yield very hard, brilliant films. The pigmented systems are bright and show exceptionally good gloss retention.
Eastman cellulose esters can reduce the cost of a metal flake coating by ensuring an even distribution of metallic flake and consistent alignment. This may allow the formulator to use less of this expensive paint ingredient. In addition, the flow and leveling properties of Eastman cellulose esters provide a superior surface smoothness.
- Superior surface finish
- Faster dry to touch
- Improved pigment density
- Enhanced color match and harmony across multiple substrates
- Enhanced metal flake orientation to deliver brighter metallic finishes
Eastman CAB-551-0.01 reduces or eliminates common surface defects observed in plastic coatings, leading to the higher gloss levels the market demands. It also ensures that the coating remains smooth over the substrate after application and during curing. Eastman CAB-551-0.01 can remedy defects such as orange peel, fish eyes, craters, flooding, floating, crawling, and reticulation.
Eastman CAB 531-1 and CAB 551-0.2 improve metallic flake alignment in plastic coatings. The ability to control metal flake orientation is critical in producing high-quality finishes. Eastman CAB acts as a viscosity control agent that “locks” the metallic and pearlescent flakes in the proper orientation. And better flake alignment means formulators require fewer flakes to achieve the same or better desired aesthetic impact.
Eastman CAB 381-0.1 in plastic coating reduces dry-to-touch time and provides low solution viscosity that enables a broader choice of application techniques.
